OUR MINUTE MAN STATUE COLLECTION
April 19, 1775 is the date of Paul Revere’s Ride, and the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The start of the American Revolution.
One hundred years later, 1875, the town of Concord commissioned a young Concord sculptor to erect an appropriate monument for the Centennial Event. His name is Daniel Chester French (1850-1931). The monument stands by Concord’s North Bridge where the famous battle took place; and in the words of Emerson, where the ‘shot heard around the world was fired”
French’s statue typifies the men that were ready on a minute’s notice -(a farmer who dropped his plow and picked up a rifle). This is the country’s most famous statue. A number of organizations have adopted this statue as their symbol, including the National Guard.
